How to Tell If Your Water Broke (or if you just peed)

What does it mean for your water to break?

What many refer to as water breaking is medically called ruptured membranes. It is a scenario in which the amniotic sac that surrounds your baby has been cut open (broken), releasing some of the amniotic fluid [1].

This is usually a result of a change in the composition of the membranes together with the enzyme working in tandem with the applied pressure of the baby’s head against the sac.

Water breaking mostly happens when you are about to deliver, that is, during the entire term (39 weeks) of your pregnancy. It is an indication that your baby is on its way.
