Types of Hernia

There are different types of hernia that affect different parts of the body, they include:

  • Hiatal hernia: this type occurs when a part of the upper belly pushes through the diaphragm [2] to the chest area. This mostly affects persons above the age of 50. There are two types of hiatal hernia which are sliding and fixed hiatal hernia. The symptoms include heartburn, belching, chest pain. It can be corrected with a surgery.
  • Inguinal hernia: this is the most common type of this medical condition. It is caused when the intestines force through a weak part of the abdominal wall especially the inguinal canal. This area is found in the groin. Some of the signs are pain, swelling in the scrotum. It can be treated by undergoing a surgical operation.
  • Umbilical hernia: this type affects babies and children more. It results when the intestines force through the abdominal wall around the belly button. This type goes away on its own in children less than 5 years of age. Symptoms include pain, presence of a bulge. A surgical operation is performed if the bulge does not go after the age of 5 years.
