Signs, Symptoms and Diagnosis of Postpartum Hernia

There are different signs of this illness depending on the type of the hernia, general signs may include:

  • A bulge or protrusion
  • Aching sensation
  • Pain or tenderness.

However for hernia after child delivery, there are more specific symptoms that will be observed, such as:

  • Tenderness in the belly button area
  • Bumpiness in the C-section area
  • Vomiting
  • Skin problems
  • Severe nausea
  • Extreme pain
  • Constipation [4]
  • Swelling or bulge
  • Difficulty in climbing stairs, coughing, laughing, sneezing or lifting something heavy.

The first step in diagnosing this issue is to see a medical doctor. A proper physical examination and review of the individual’s medical history is done by the doctor. Mostly, the protrusion in obvious and can be felt, however, in some rare cases, different tests and scans are done to fully detect a bulge, its location and size. Some of these tests are:

  • CT scan: A computed tomography is done in order to see the conditions a=of the organs of the body. It is uses an x-ray beams to get a full imaging of the bones, tissues and organs of the body.
  • Ultrasound: this is also called a sonography scan. It makes use of wave beams to view the condition of the organs, tissues and bones of the body. This helps to view the size of the bulge, the location and how sever it is.

These scans mentioned above helps the doctor know how serious the bulge is, if there would be a need for surgery or not or the necessary medications to prescribe.
