Treatment for Postpartum Hernia

In some cases, hernia doesn’t cause problems to lead to further complications and in cases like that surgery is not important. However, regular checkups should be done in order to monitor any other changes in the body.
Before another pregnant, it is important to also check with your doctor to know if you may require surgery or if you can go ahead with having another child.
If the hernia is large and may lead to more complications, a surgical operation is performed and they are:
- Laparoscopic surgery: this is done by making small cuts in which instruments for the surgery are inserted. Then a mesh is placed in the abdomen in order to prevent the reoccurrence of abdominal hernia and help the opened part heal faster. When a mesh is used, there is 5%-10% chance of the condition coming back but when only a stitch is used, there is 30-50% probability of the hernia showing up again.
- Open surgery: this process involves cutting open the stomach and closing of the openings in the muscle or organ that leads to hernia.
- Abdominal binder: this is a wide belt that is used round the abdomen. It gives support to the abdomen and helps relieve pressure on the back. The doctor advises the usage of the belt after the surgical operation. The usage of this belt also relieves pain from an incisional repair surgery.
