Premenopause vs. Perimenopause: What’s the Difference?

Mood Swings

You may experience more frequent mood swings during perimenopause. Irritability is the most common symptom in 70 percent of females transitioning to menopause, according to one study [5]. Sadness is another common mood associated with perimenopause. The mood swings observed during perimenopause are caused by hormonal changes. Increased irritability during perimenopause can cause frequent flights into rage and anger. One minute, you’re calm and collected and the next, you’re enraged over what people might consider a small issue.

According to some healthcare experts [6], you’re more likely to experience intense perimenopausal mood swings if you’ve always had pronounced premenstrual syndrome (PMS) post-puberty.
