High Blood Sugar and Pregnancy

Gestational diabetes usually develops in pregnancy and disappears automatically after giving birth. The condition can happen to any woman, but the following groups have higher chances of having gestational diabetes.

  • Body mass index is above 30
  • Having born a baby weight 4.5kg+
  • Gestational diabetes history in a previous pregnancy
  • Having a diabetic family member, such as your parents, siblings
  • Belonging to Black, south Asian, African-Caribbean, or Middle Eastern origin ethnic groups

In most cases, women with gestational diabetes are asymptomatic. They may only discover a high blood sugar condition after taking the screening test. However, if women have too much sugar in their blood, i.e., hyperglycemia, they may experience some symptoms, including

  • Dry mouth and excessive thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Fatigue [3]
