Six Common Maternal Health Problems during Pregnancy

Urinary Tract Infections and Pregnancy

Pregnant women have an increased likelihood of developing repeated or more server urinary tract infections because of various pregnancy-related changes happening in their bodies. As it is reported, more than 1 in 10 women will have urinary tract infections during their pregnancies. On the one hand, the growing fetus causes pressure on the bladder and affects normal urine flow. On the other hand, pregnant women are more susceptible to dehydration. When not drinking enough water, they can have darker and more concentrated urine, making them at higher risk of having urinary tract infections.

Here are some common symptoms of urinary tract infection during pregnancy:

  • Having a burning sensation when passing urine
  • Frequent urination
  • Urgent urination
  • Smelly urine
  • Fever
  • Pain above the public bone [4]
