Take a Pain Reliever

You can take over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers to help reduce period cramps and other period-related pain, such as headaches. You can take any type of pain reliever to reduce period cramps. However, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most effective. They are known to reduce pain and inflammation. They also reduce the number of prostaglandins produced by the body and reduce their effects.
Examples of over-the-counter nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs include:
- Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
- Naproxen (Aleve)
- Aspirin (Bufferin)
According to a 2020 meta-analysis, ibuprofen is the best of these OTC NSAID. A study compared the potency of OTC pain relievers for period pain. The study discovered that the most effective was actually diclofenac, but it was worse for safety. For this reason ibuprofen was described as the best option for dysmenorrhea. NSAIDs work best if they are used immediately when you start to experience the first signs of pain or cramps. It is important to take them as directed by your doctor. If you have a history of asthma [4], liver, kidney, or heart problems [5], contact your doctor for additional advice.
