Ulcerative Colitis and Your Menstrual Cycle – What’s the Connection?

Effects of Ulcerative colitis drugs on menstruation

Some drugs prescribed by your health care provider can make you more prone to an unstable menstrual cycle. Studies show that some Corticosteroids can result in unstable menstruation. Some of these drugs are:

  • Budesonide
  • Prednisolone
  • Methylprednisolone
  • Prednisone

Other medications used in treating UC such as thiopurine and anti-TNF agents can not result in irregular menstruation.

Asides from altering the duration and time of your period, some IBD drugs can exacerbate the symptoms of menstruation during your period.

A study was done in 2020 to observe women between 18 and 50 years who were diagnosed with UC or other kinds of IBD. The study showed that women who received biologics experienced some symptoms in severe forms. These symptoms include:

  • irritability
  • nervousness
  • pelvic pain
  • fatigue

You may experience symptoms like fatigue, and discomfort in the pelvis, low back, and abdomen. These symptoms are found at higher levels in people who smoke.

If you observe any changes in your menstruation or any other negative effects after using some Ulcerative colitis drugs, you should contact your health care provider to receive proper treatment.
