Ulcerative Colitis and Your Menstrual Cycle – What’s the Connection?

Ulcerative colitis symptoms may exacerbate during menstruation

Contraction in your colon and uterine are caused by the same hormone (prostaglandin). As a result, most symptoms of UC are worse during your period.  Studies done in 2018, which observed over 1,200 women with UC or Crohn’s disease (CD) [2], discovered that half of the women experienced intense IBD symptoms while menstruating.

A 2013 study evaluated 47 women with IBD and 44 people in a control group revealed that the women with IBD released more stools (even loose stools) and had intense abdominal discomfort during their menstrual cycle than women without the disease. This doesn’t imply you’ll have more intense UV symptoms during your period. However, it would help to know about the chances of worsened symptoms so you can plan and learn how to live during your menstrual cycle.
