Boric Acid for Azole-Resistant Infections

Some yeast infections are resistant to standard antifungal medications and require other types of treatments. In such a situation, your doctor may prescribe boric acid. Boric acid is a chemical that has antifungal and antiseptic properties. The form used to treat yeast infections is a capsule that is inserted into the vagina as a suppository. Treatment often involves single use daily for seven days.

A study found that boric acid is effective in treating yeast infections resistant to other types of treatment for yeast infection. [4] This medication is reserved for candida fungi that show resistance to standard antifungals, not regular treatable yeast infections. Boric acid can irritate the skin and is toxic if applied to open wounds. It should never be taken orally because it can be fatal.
