Yeast Infection Treatments

Alternative Medicine

Alternative remedies are not an approved treatment option for yeast infections. This is because the efficacy of these treatments in curing yeast infection has not been confirmed. While some of these alternative medicines may provide some relief, you should speak to your doctor before using them.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is an essential oil with antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. It is made from the leaves of the tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and is sometimes employed in the treatment of yeast infections. Some studies indicate that tea tree oil may be an effective treatment for vaginal infections when inserted as a suppository. [5]

Doctors often advise against douching because this can kill a lot of good bacteria which is part of the vagina’s natural microflora and allow fungi that cause yeast infection to proliferate unchecked. [6] These good bacteria help maintain a balance of the vagina’s microflora and control fungi. [7] Tea tree oil is thought to spare these bacteria when used to treat yeast infections. [8]

Tea tree oil may irritate the skin when applied topically. You should make sure to dilute this oil if applying it to the vagina.
