Complications that Could Arise from Kawasaki Disease

Studies show that Kawasaki disease can cause serious heart conditions in about 25% of children who have the condition. If left untreated, KD can lead to heart attack and other complications such as:
- Aneurysm, or weakening and bulging of the artery wall
- Myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart muscle dysrhythmia, or an abnormal heart rhythm
When a child begins to experience complications, doctors may recommend long-term doses of aspirin. The child may also have to take blood thinners or undergo procedures like coronary artery stenting, coronary angioplasty, or coronary artery bypass. Children with coronary artery problems that are caused by Kawasaki Disease should avoid lifestyle factors that increase the risks of having a heart attack. Lifestyle factors to stay away from include smoking, having high cholesterol, and being overweight.
