Is Micellar Water Harmful?

Providing Hydration

Micellar water has hydrating compounds like humectants. Humectants[3] are moisturizing elements that pull water from deep layers of the skin into the outer layers and surrounding air.

Studies show that glycerin is the most potent humectant that can be used to boost hydration in the top layer of the skin. Studies also show that glycerin [4] helps fix problems that occur in the skin barrier. The skin barrier plays a significant role in maintaining hydration and resisting the effects of environmental infection and damage.

Suitable for Sensitive Skin

Micellar water can be used for any type of skin. According to a 2020 study, people with rosacea can use micellar water to clean their skin. However, the product must not contain irritants.

If you have rosacea or sensitive skin, it would help to use micellar waters that do not have:

  • Essential oils [5]
  • Alcohol[6]
  • Fragrance

Also, micellar water is made up of soothing ingredients like glycerin, which may help reduce irritation. Several studies done on rats show that topical glycerin may help reduce markers of inflammation and irritation. Since these studies were not done on humans, it is unclear if they can have the same effects in humans.
