Hard Lump under Skin: 8 Causes and How They Are Treated

Epidermoid Cyst and the Treatment

An epidermoid cyst is a little, round lump under the skin. They mostly occur when shed skin cells go into the skin instead of falling off. Epidermoid cysts may also develop when hair follicles get irritated or destroyed due to accumulation of keratin [1]. Things to know about epidermoid cysts are:

  • They can be present for years if proper care is not given
  • They are usually benign and without pain, but they get red and tender if compromised (infection)
  • Epidermoid cysts grow slowly, compared to other cysts
  • They sometimes release yellow discharge with a bad odor. This discharge is the built-up keratin
  • Epidermoid cysts have a little blackhead in the middle of the lump
  • They feel smooth when rolled beneath the skin

Epidermoid cysts are popular in men and are not formed before puberty [2]. These cysts can be located anywhere in the body. However, they are commonly seen on the face neck and torso.

In many cases, this cyst does not require treatment, however, there is always a little chance that they could become cancerous. People are advised to watch it carefully and report to a doctor if they see any changes in the size or shape of the lump.

Antibiotics are sometimes prescribed to treat infections on the cyst. Intralesional steroid injections reduce the swelling and inflammation.
