Dermatofibroma and the Treatment

A dermatofibroma is a little hard lump that develops beneath the skin. This lump is benign, but it causes itchiness or pain in some cases. The exact cause of dermatofibroma is not clear. However, experts think it can be caused by insect bites [4], splinter or several other traumas (bumping your arm or leg) at the location where they grow.

Dermatofibromas possess scar tissue and feel like hard lumps beneath the skin. To properly treat dermatofibroma, there are certain to know about them, they include:

  • They appear as dark pink or brown color. However, it is known that their color changes with time.
  • They grow slowly
  • Dermatofibromas have a firm and rubbery feeling
  • They are mostly not bigger than 1cm in length (as small as a BB pellet)
  • They are more popular in women.
  • A dimple appears when it is pinched

Dermatofibroma can be found anywhere in the body. However, their common place of growth are the lower legs and upper arms.

Dermatofibromas are benign and they do not require any medical intervention. In many cases, they begin to cause pain and changes occur in their shape or size, at this point, medical treatment is needed. In some cases, doctors recommend surgical procedures to completely remove them.

Dermatofibroma can also be flattened when they get frozen with liquid nitrogen.
