Do IUDs Cause Weight Gain?

IUD and Weight gain

People believe using an IUD as a birth control method can result in weight gain. However, studies show that most women gain weight during their reproductive years, irrespective of the type of birth control method they use.

The National Collaborating Centre for Women’s and Children’s Health have released several studies that show the relationship between copper IUDs and weight gain. These studies provide no evidence that IUDs can cause weight gain.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information confirms that hormonal forms of birth control do not contribute significantly to weight gain. You can speak to your healthcare provider if you think your hormonal contraceptive is responsible for your weight gain.
