How to Drink without Getting Drunk

Change the Shape of Your Glass

Although it seems irrelevant, there is some proof that the shape of your glass may affect how much you drink.

Participants in one study found that consuming alcoholic beverages [4] from a straight glass took them 60 percent longer than from a curved one. The study was limited, not conducted in real life, and only included beer as an alcoholic beverage. Even so, if you prefer not to drink and have a tendency to down cold ones quickly, it might be worth a go.

That said, an earlier study from 2005 [5] found that the form of the glass can also matter when it comes to mixed beverages.

In that study, it was discovered that people—including bartenders—unknowingly pour 20–30% more alcohol into short, wide glasses than they do into tall, slim ones.

Asking for your drink in a tall, thin glass may be worthwhile if you’re out drinking and trying not to become wasted.

Using a tall, slim glass or one that has the alcohol content already labeled will prevent you from inadvertently underestimating your pour while making your own drinks.
