How Triglycerides Affect Your Health?

Triglycerides vs. cholesterol

Synthesis of cholesterol and triglycerides occurs in the liver. They are both released into the blood and stored in certain tissues.

While triglycerides are a special form of lipid or fat that serve as a reservoir for unutilized calories, cholesterol is a lipoprotein that helps synthesize steroid hormones, produce vitamin D, and develop cells.

Normal vs high triglyceride levels

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommends a lipid panel to test your blood levels of:

  • Triglycerides
  • Total cholesterol
  • HDL (good) cholesterol
  • LDL (bad) cholesterol

Your doctor may tell you to avoid eating anything 8 or 12 hours before the test. You can get the results after some days. After the test, your doctor will recommend several changes depending on the results of your test.

Normal level for:

  • Adults is 150mg/dL
  • Children between 10 and 19 is 90mg/dL
  • Children younger than 10 years is 75mg/dL

High level for:

  • Adults is more than 200 mg/dL
  • Children between 10 and 19 is more than 130 mg/dL
  • Children younger than 10 is over 100 mg/dL
