Sweating Out a Cold: Does it Hurt or Help?

Do Saunas Help Treat a Cold?

Saunas, unlike a steam room or a warm shower have dry heat instead. Although there’s not enough evidence to show that it would help cure a cold, it might help prevent it.

If you do decide to visit a sauna, there are certain precautions you should follow. They include:

  • Spend only a maximum of 15 to 20 minutes in a sauna
  • Ensure to rehydrate after your sauna session by drinking at least two glasses of cool water
  • Avoid food or drinks that can cause dehydration, such as too much salt, caffeine, or alcohol. A short sauna can cause you to lose a fair amount of sweat.
  • Gradually cool your body down after your sauna. Avoid jumping right into a cold environment after a hot sauna as it can cause stress on the body
  • If you feel you cannot proceed with the sauna, leave and cool off.
  • Do not use a sauna if you are pregnant
