9 Effective Treatments for Cold

Decongestant

In the common cold, the nasal cavities are usually congested and filled with swollen membranes. Decongestants are drugs that help reduce these inflamed membranes and make breathing more manageable; they can be administered through the mouth or the nose. Oral decongestants are more common and preferred than nasal decongestants. Doctors always advise not to administer decongestants through the nose for more than four days because excess usage can adversely affect the nose. Patients with underlying medical conditions such as hypertension or high blood pressure cannot use decongestants except a medical doctor appropriately monitors them. Also, individuals on monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) [5] are not allowed to use nasal decongestants.
