Stem cell dental implants is a possibility that could allow parts of teeth to regrow even as an adult. Scientists have shown that stimulating the stem cells within the pulp of teeth can cause the regrowth of dentin. The procedure allows for cavities [2] to reverse without the need of fillings.
A similar technique could potentially be used to help regrow entire teeth. Stem cells could be used to create a tooth in the earliest stages of growth, called a tooth primordium. The primordium could be implanted into gums to replace a missing tooth. However, unlike the fact that the stem cells needed to grow dentine are already inside adult teeth, the stem cells needed to create a tooth primordium are found only in embryos.
More research needs to be done to find another source of these specific stem cells. Once a source is found, that might just be the last step to make it possible for stem cells to be used to regrow teeth.
