Emery-Dreifuss Muscular Dystrophy and Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy (OPMD)

Boys are more likely than girls to suffer from Emery-Dreifuss Muscular Dystrophy. Onset usually begins in childhood. The signs include weakness in the upper arms and lower legs, shortening of muscles in the neck, spine, elbows, knees, and ankles, difficulty breathing and heart problems [10].

OPMD more frequently affects middle-aged men and women [11]. It causes weakness in the shoulder, neck, and facial muscles. Signs include difficulty swallowing, voice modulation, drooping eyelids, vision problems and heart problems.
