Swelling in the neck

According to research, swelling in the neck is one of the most common symptoms of iodine deficiency. It is also known as goiter and it occurs when the thyroid gland enlarges. The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in front of your neck. It produces thyroid hormones anytime it receives a signal from the thyroid-stimulating hormones (TSH) [3]. When your body lacks sufficient iodine, the gland cannot produce enough hormones. As a result, the thyroid gland works harder to make more, causing the cells to grow and multiply. This eventually leads to goiter. In most cases, swelling in the neck can be treated by increasing your iodine consumption. However, if a goiter [4] has not been treated for many years, it might lead to permanent damage.
