Identifying Spider Bites: Signs and Appearance

Hobo spiders

Hobo spiders are commonly found in the Pacific Northwest. They are about half to three-quarters of an inch long. They are fast runners and they usually sit up high. Hobo spiders only bite when they are provoked.

They live in closets, behind furniture, and under baseboards. Hobo spider bites are usually painless at first. After 15 minutes, the bite starts to feel numb and painful.  After 1 hour, the bite starts to turn red. It gets swollen and hard after 8 hours. The bite starts to discharge fluids and turn black after 1-2 days.

Symptoms of a hobo spider bite include:

  • Joint pain
  • Sweating
  • A red or purple blister at the puncture site
  • Weakness
  • Visual or aural disruption
  • Headaches
  • Nausea

It would be best to contact your doctor immediately if a hobo spider bites you.
