Is Mouthwash Bad for You?

Signs that you are overusing mouthwash

As opposed to the popular mentality, it is very possible to misuse mouthwash. In most cases, nonprescription mouthwashes are to be used just twice a day, together with flossing and brushing. Some people use mouthwash more than necessary, using it to freshen their breath or clean their mouth after meals.

It is important to reduce or stop using mouthwash if you observe the following symptoms:

  1. Consistent or irritating canker sores
  2. Symptoms of dry mouth
  3. Teeth staining [4]
  4. Bleeding gums [5] after using your mouthwash
  5. Pain or sensitivity when you brush your teeth after using mouthwash.
