Poor Hygiene: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

Treatment for poor hygiene

The best treatment for poor hygiene is to learn how to practice good hygiene. Here are some ways to practice good hygiene:

  • Brush your teeth twice daily: Brushing your teeth twice daily, usually when you wake up and before you go to bed will make it easier to get into a routine. Brushing your teeth doesn’t take time, you only need to spend two minutes for a good cleaning. So, you can do it even if you are short of time.
  • Take a proper bath daily: A proper shower or bath is very important to maintain good hygiene. This doesn’t take time, as long as you cover the important parts, such as the pits and private bits. If access to water is limited, you can use a damp clean cloth or sponge to wash your genitals, around your anus, under your arms, and between any skin folds.
  • Wash your clothes and beddings regularly: Bacteria can easily get attached to your clothes. It is advisable to do your laundry once per week whether by machine or hand. If you need to re-wear your cloth, a quick wash and spread to dry is important. Keeping your body clean lets you extend the time between washing clothes and sheets.
  • Wash your hand often: One of the easiest ways for bacteria, viruses, or fungi to spread is through the hand. COVID-19 has shown us how washing hands can help stop the spread of illnesses and keep us healthy. Ensure to wash your hands before and after contact is shared, or on any likely unsanitary or contaminated surfaces to protect yourself and others.
  • Wipe properly after going to the toilet: This is very important. Proper cleaning of your anus after using the toilet will keep underwear clean and prevent bad odor. Always wipe front to back to keep bacteria away from the urethra which would help prevent urinary Infections. Body wipes or a bidet work, too. (Though keep in mind that wipes can make life hard for sanitation workers. So if you don’t need them, it’s best to stick with TP). You can opt for a toilet paper aid if you are unable to wipe due to pain or disability.
  • Wash your hair regularly: The recommended number of times to wash your hair is at least every three days. It also depends on other factors such as:
    • How oily or dry your hair is
    • How much you sweat
    • How much hair products you use

Most people don’t need to use shampoo more than once a day. Every 2 to 3 days is okay, but feel free to experiment by extending the time between washes. You should also be careful about the products you use on your hair. Your scalp is your priority so ensure you take care of it properly.
