Serotonin Syndrome: What It Is, Causes, Treatment & More

Treatment for serotonin syndrome

If you have a very minor case of serotonin syndrome, your doctor may just suggest that you stop taking the drug that is the source of the issue right away.

You will require hospitalization if your symptoms are severe. In the hospital, your doctor will keep a close eye on your health. Additionally, you might be given the following treatments:

  • removal of any drugs that contributed to the condition
  • fluids given intravenously for fever and dehydration
  • drugs that alleviate tension or tense muscles
  • prescription drugs that inhibit serotonin

Cyproheptadine, an antidote, may be advised by a physician in extreme circumstances. Cyproheptadine has not yet been scientifically confirmed to be useful, although doctors seem to have used it successfully in patients who did not respond to other treatments.
