Should You Flip Your Mattress?

Do you have to flip your mattress?

Only mattresses designed for flipping should be flipped. Most modern mattress designs only possess a supportive and comfortable layer on one side, with a tight layer of foam or metal springs [5] on the other side. Mattresses with these designs should not be flipped to avoid getting an ultra-firm surface and an uncomfortable sleep.

On the other hand, reversible designs can be flipped. Each side of the bed will have a different level of firmness. In this case, it is important to choose which side is more comfortable for you. If both sides have the same level of firmness, you can choose any side to sleep on. You can check the company’s site or your bed’s label to know if it can be flipped.

How often should you flip your mattress?

There is no perfect time or routine for flipping your mattress. However, mattress producers advise people to flip their beds every 3 to 6 months. You may decide to do this more regularly, especially if you feel like you need to refresh.

For mattress rotation, the schedule depends on the type of design. Designs such as latex and memory foam [6] should be rotated at least twice a year. Older innerspring products should be rotated 2 to 5 times every year. It is important to remain consistent with any schedule you choose.
