Serious or chronic steatorrhea requires immediate medical attention. In some cases, Mild to moderate steatorrhea may lead to minor dehydration and discomfort but these symptoms can cause serious conditions, including heart attack and organ failure if left untreated. Steatorrhea can also be a sign of existing medical conditions that require treatment. Some of these conditions are gastrointestinal disease, enzyme deficiencies, or hypoparathyroidism. The presence of fat in a stool sample can help diagnose these conditions.
