Straining to Poop: Risks and How to Avoid

When Should You Consult a Doctor?

Make an appointment with a doctor if you frequently find yourself struggling to go to the bathroom or haven’t had a bowel movement in a few days. To discuss with your doctor, make careful to record any additional symptoms, such as:

  • Blood in your stool
  • Hard or lumpy feces
  • Sense that you can’t get all the poop out of your rectum
  • Bloating
  • Discomfort in the abdomen
  • Pain in the ankles

Be prepared to discuss your diet and exercise habits with your doctor as well.
