The Impact of Gluten on Arthritis

Celiac Disease and Inflammation

Celiac disease is classified as an autoimmune disorder where the consumption of gluten causes inflammation in the small intestine. People living with celiac disease are advised not to consume foods with gluten.

Inflammation of the small intestine begins to show symptoms such as; diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bloating. Gluten can be absorbed into the blood, so people with celiac disease can experience inflammation in other parts of the body like the joints. Celiac can lead to the following conditions if left untreated:

  • bone loss [3]
  • gall bladder dysfunction [4]
  • weight loss
  • anemia [5]
  • development of several autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis

Celiac disease can lead to the development of other inflammatory disorders just like inflammatory arthritis. People with celiac disease are at risk of developing another autoimmune disorder. In some cases, celiac disease is misdiagnosed as arthritis.

The research was done by the celiac disease foundation and it was discovered that children living with celiac disease have a 1.5 to 6.6 chance of having juvenile arthritis.
