What Do Chigger Bites Look Like?

How Do Chiggers Burrow Under The Skin?

Chiggers move into the skin when we come in contact with certain plants. They move through the skin, looking for the perfect place to feed. People believe chiggers stay in the skin after burrowing. However, studies show that it is not valid. The insects place their feeding organs on the skin and release digestive enzymes [1] that help decompose skin tissues. The release of digestive enzymes results in the hardening of the skin. A feeding tube known as a stylostome is developed when the skin is hardened. The insect eats the decomposed tissue. In most cases, chiggers may feed on the decomposed tissue for days if they are not noticed on time. The decomposed tissues pass through the feeding tube to the chigger.

Chiggers have sensitive mouth and feeding structures. So, they can only penetrate folded or wrinkled skins. Bites may occur in the crotch, posterior part of the knee, groin areas, and armpits. Experts say bites also occur in areas where movement is hindered, such as the waist. Unlike mosquitoes, the location of chigger bites is mainly in hidden places and not exposed areas.
