What Do the Different Poop Colors and Shapes Mean?

The Bristol Stool Chart

Type 1- separate hard lumps. It means the person is very constipated.

Type 2 – lumpy and sausage like. The person is slightly constipated.

Type 3- a sausage shape with cracks in the surface. This is normal poop.

Type 4- like a smooth, soft sausage or snake. This is normal poop.

Type 5- soft blobs with clear-cut edges. The person is lacking fibers.

Type 6- mushy consistency with ragged edges. Inflammation has occurred in the large intestine.

Type 7- liquid consistency with no solid pieces. This indicates the presence of inflammation and diarrhea.

This chart was based on research of the bowel movements of about 2000 people by the Bristol Royal Infirmary in England. From the chart, types 1 and 2 specify constipation (i.e., they are very painful to pass out), types 3 and 4 designate a healthy stool, and types 5 to 7 propose diarrhea (watery and mushy stool).
