What Do the Different Poop Colors and Shapes Mean?

Bright Red Stool

The red color may indicate gastrointestinal bleeding in the lower intestinal tract. In situations in which there is blood in your stool, the location in which the bleeding occurs in the digestive tract is what determines what color of blood will be in your poop. Blood located in the upper region of the gastrointestinal tract, esophagus or stomach, will eventually appear dark when leaving the body as a bowel movement. Hemorrhoids can also be a result of slight drops of blood in the stool, which color it red.

Foods or fruits that are red-colored like red berries, tomatoes, or beet juice can also color your poop, but given time, the color will revert back to normal brown once such foods have been digested.
