Who Is More Likely to Develop Lupus?

Studies show that lupus commonly affects people between 15-44 years and that 90% of adults with lupus are women. Studies also show that 1 in 3 people with lupus have several autoimmune diseases. Women from certain races are also more likely to develop lupus. For example, African American women are more susceptible to this condition than white females. Other races that are more susceptible to this condition include:

  • Alaska Natives
  • Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders
  • Hispanic Americans
  • Latin Americans
  • Native Americans
  • Asian Americans

Lupus may be inheritable. Studies show that 20% of people with the disease have a sibling or parent who already has lupus or may have it.
