Gilenya Oral: Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, and More

Overview

Gilenya is a medication that has its Generic name as Fingolimod. It is a medication that is used to treat multiple sclerosis (MS). The drug is not a cure for MS but it is a treatment that helps to prevent immune system cells (lymphocytes) from attacking the nerves in your brain and spinal cord. Even though it doesn’t cure the condition completely, it has been proven effective to help decrease the number of episodes of worsening and may prevent or delay disability.

Gilenya is a medication that should only be prescribed to you by your doctor. You should not use Gilenya if you have a heart condition. Severe heart conditions such as heart failure, sick sinus syndrome, AV block, stroke, chest pain, heart attack, or other serious heart problems. The reason for this is that, generally, Fingolimod can slow your heart rate. You will receive your first dose at the hospital so that your doctor can closely and carefully monitor your heart rhythm.
