Drugs That Interact with Prednisone

Prednisone can interact with other medications and vitamins. These interactions affect the way the drug works and prevent it from working normally. This can be very harmful, that is why it is very important to discuss with your doctor if you are on any medication while he prescribes prednisone for you. Examples of drugs that can interact with prednisone are explained below:
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) [5]: Taking prednisone with NSAIDs may cause bleeding in the stomach. Examples of NSAIDs include Ibuprofen, meloxicam, diclofenac, and indomethacin.
- Live vaccines: As explained earlier, live vaccines are made from weakened or dead forms of pathogens that cause certain infections and are used to build immunity against these infections. Taking live vaccines whilst on prednisone medication affects your immune system and might lead to infection.
- Drugs that are used to treat diabetes mellitus: Using prednisone with drugs that are given to treat diabetes can be harmful because prednisone raises blood glucose levels. Examples of these drugs are metformin, repaglinide, and glipizide.
- Drugs used to treat AIDS. Examples include: ritonavir, atazanavir, nevirapine, nelfinavir.
- Drugs used to treat seizures like phenytoin, carbamazepine,
- Drugs that are used to treat tuberculosis such as rifapentine and isoniazid.
