Xanax and Alcohol: Side Effects and Risks

Sedation

Xanax and alcohol have sedative effects. That is, they can lead to fatigue, drowsiness, or impairment. Using one of them can make you feel sleepy. They both affect how the muscles function. They can control coordination and balance. Some people might lose balance while walking or slur your speech. These sedative effects increase when Xanax and alcohol are used together.

Mood and Behavioral Effects

Xanax can cause depression, irritability and confusion. In some cases, you might experience suicidal thoughts, but it’s rare. Some rare side effects are:

  • Rage
  • Aggression
  • Hostile behavior

Alcohol also has negative effects on your mood. For some people it leads to a temporary mood boost, although it’s a depressant. Others may experience negative side effects, like feelings of sadness. Alcohol also reduces inhibitions and impairs judgment. This makes it easier to do things you wouldn’t normally do.

These mood changes and behavioral effects increase when Xanax and alcohol are combined.
