Bladder Suspension Surgery – What You Need to Know

Types of Bladder Suspension Surgery

There are different approach and techniques to bladder suspension surgery. They include:

  • Open retropubic suspension surgery
  • Laparoscopic retropubic suspension surgery
  • Needle bladder neck suspension surgery

To understand these different surgeries continue reading.

Open retropubic suspension surgery

This is a form of abdominal surgery that involves pulling up the bladder neck and sewing it to the surrounding bone or tissue with sutures. The surgeon would make an incision in the belly area not far from the belly button and locates the bladder and urethra, the tube through which urine flows out of the body.

The procedure is effective in improving symptoms of stress incontinence that results from sagging of the bladder neck or urethra.

Laparoscopic retropubic suspension surgery

This type of suspension surgery has been around since the early 1990s. It involves a smaller incision compared to the open procedure. However, some studies suggest that laparoscopic suspension surgery result in higher complication rate, and that the open technique tends to produce higher cure rates.

Although, recent discoveries suggest that this procedure allows for a faster recovery and offers more advantages. More research is still needed to confirm its safety and effectiveness.

Needle bladder neck suspension surgery

This type of surgery is done through the abdomen or vagina. However, it is not as effective as stress incontinence surgeries that are done through the abdominal wall.
