What is Knee Replacement Surgery?

What Happens after the Procedure at the Hospital

The patient is taken to the recovery room for observation so risks can be identified early. The blood pressure, pulse rate and breathing rate must be stable before patients can leave the hospital. After the surgery, patients are required to remain in the hospital for several days. A physical therapist organizes and exercises program because it is imperative to move the newly implanted joint after surgery.  Continuous passive motion (CPM) is used to start physical therapy. The CPM helps with joint motility through its range while the patient lies on the bed. Drugs are given to patients to reduce any pain that can result from movement during exercise. The hospital recommends an exercise schedule to follow while in the hospital and at home. This is important because the excess movement of the joint should be avoided to avoid any form of medication. Patients are discharged to a rehabilitation center or their home. At the same time, the doctor ensures the continuation of the exercise schedule until muscle strength, stability, and a good range of movement is acquired.
