What is Knee Replacement Surgery?

What Happens during the Procedure

The patient’s knee is usually in a bent position to show all the surfaces of the joint. The doctor makes an incision of 6-10 inches (15 to 25 centimeters) long, then the damaged points in the knee cap are removed. The surgeon then joins the artificial joints after adequate preparation of the surfaces. The patient tries moving the knee by bending and rotation the joint to confirm the integrity of the implant. Excess hair at the surgical site is removed, the heart rate and blood pressure are closely monitored to prevent complications during surgery. Knee replacement surgery is usually done for about 2 hours.
