Breast MRI Scan

Before Breast MRI

Your doctor will first review your medical history and conduct a physical exam to ensure you are fit to have a breast MRI. You must inform your doctor about any medication you may be taking or any allergies you have.

Details to inform your doctor include:

  • If you have had any prior allergic reaction to contrast dye
  • If you have any implanted medical devices
  • If you are pregnant, think you are or are currently breastfeeding
  • If you have any kidney problem

It is not safe to have a breast MRI when you are pregnant. Breastfeeding mothers should also ensure not to breastfeed their children for at least 2 days after the test.

Your doctor would also recommend scheduling your MRI at the start of your menstrual cycle. Usually between the seventh and fourteenth day of your menstrual cycle.

You should inform your doctor if you are claustrophobic since the machine is in a tight and enclosed space. Your doctor might prescribe a sedative to calm you down. In some cases, your doctor may recommend an open MRI [5], where the machine isn’t as close to your body. Your doctor will determine which is best for you.
