Breast MRI Scan

Possible Risks of Breast MRI

There is no research to prove that breast MRI is in any way harmful or that the emission of radio waves and magnetic fields is harmful. However, it is best for a pregnant woman to avoid a breast MRI, especially if the case isn’t urgent.

Here are a few factors to consider when you perform a breast MRI:

  • Allergic reaction to contrast dye: An MRI will usually involve injecting a dye into your bloodstream. This is to make the images appear more visible. However, the dye has been known to cause allergic reactions, as well as serious complications for people with kidney problems.
  • False result: An MRI scan can lead you astray if not careful. It doesn’t always distinguish between cancerous and noncancerous growth. Therefore, masses that are not cancerous can appear cancerous. To avoid this, it is important to do a biopsy [4] to confirm the results of your test. A biopsy is the surgical removal of a tissue sample from the affected area (a lump).
