Breast MRI Scan

A breast MRI scan is an imaging test that involves the use of magnets and radio waves to check if there are any abnormalities in the breast.

An MRI should only be done by a professional medical doctor. Your doctor will recommend an MRI if you suspect there are any abnormalities in your breast. It allows them to see the soft tissue within your body.

Importance of Breast MRI Scan

A breast MRI is a very effective way to diagnose any problem in the breast. However, it is usually not the first option.  The importance and use of breast cancer include:

  • Breast MRI is done to examine the breasts when other imaging tests are inadequate or inconclusive.
  • It is used to screen for breast cancer in women that have a high risk of developing the condition.
  • It is used to follow up on the treatment and also monitors the progression of breast cancer [1].

Other reasons your doctor will order a breast MRI include:

  • If you have a lump in your breast
  • If you are showing symptoms of breast cancer [2]
  • If you have a family history of Breast cancer
  • If you have a dense breast tissue
  • If you have a leaking or ruptured breast implant
  • if you experience precancerous breast changes

Even though an MRI scan is effective in detecting abnormalities, the standard screening tool for breast cancer is a mammogram [3]. It is best to use MRIs with mammograms.
