Importance of Breast MRI Scan

A breast MRI is a very effective way to diagnose any problem in the breast. However, it is usually not the first option.  The importance and use of breast cancer include:

• Breast MRI is done to examine the breasts when other imaging tests are inadequate or inconclusive.
• It is used to screen for breast cancer in women that have a high risk of developing the condition.
• It is used to follow up on the treatment and also monitors the progression of breast cancer [1].

Other reasons your doctor will order a breast MRI include:

• If you have a lump in your breast
• If you are showing symptoms of breast cancer [2]
• If you have a family history of Breast cancer
• If you have a dense breast tissue
• If you have a leaking or ruptured breast implant
• if you experience precancerous breast changes

Even though an MRI scan is effective in detecting abnormalities, the standard screening tool for breast cancer is a mammogram [3]. It is best to use MRIs with mammograms.
