Can Blood Tests Help Diagnose and Treat Bipolar Disorder?

What does a blood test do?

For bipolar depression or disorder, blood tests are done in the early stages. Blood tests are also more effective in the early stages. Over the years, more research has been done to understand the test.  Studies have been done to evaluate the importance of brain-derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF). It is a molecule in the brain that influences learning and memory. Its expression, however, is complex. Researchers have discovered links between mood conditions and the levels of proBDNF and mBDNF in the blood.

In 2017, a study of Over 105 people discovered that the levels of mBDNF in the blood of people with bipolar disorder were lower than in those with MDD. The ratio between mBDNF and proBDNF in the bipolar disorder group was also smaller than in those with MDD. Scientists suggest that this was a good development because patients with bipolar disorder are usually misdiagnosed with MDD. Your doctor will recommend a blood test to detect bipolar disorder and some depressive episodes.

A 2021 study of a new assay test showed you can diagnose low blood mBDNF levels with MDD or bipolar disorder with 80 to 83 percent accuracy.
