Overview
Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of the deeper layers of the skin. The causal bacteria, usually streptococcus or staphylococcus, typically enters the body through broken skin. It may also enter through swollen or dry, flaky skin. It is not transmitted by person-to-person contact. Animal bites may also cause cellulitis.
Most people who have cellulitis develop it on their lower legs [1], but it may also affect other body parts including the face and arms. If the infection is not treated on time, it may spread into the lymph nodes and bloodstream. This can make the infection fatal within a short time.
It is easy to spot a cellulitis infection when it occurs. The affected part of the skin usually appears red and swollen and may be painful to the touch. If you are unsure whether the symptoms you have are indicative of cellulitis or something else, read on for clarity.
