Ascites: What It Is, Causes, Appearance, Treatment

What are the most important things to note about ascites?

Ascites is a condition that is characterized by the abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity, which can result in a large distended abdomen. As the abdomen gets bigger, the pressure in your abdomen increases and you may start to experience abdominal discomfort, lack of appetite, and loss of breath. In addition, ascites can result in severe health complications, such as spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, malnutrition, pleural effusion, hepatorenal syndrome, and gastrointestinal bleeding.

Ascites commonly affect people with portal hypertension and cirrhosis. The condition is treated by reducing your intake of sodium. It can also be treated by taking diuretic drugs to increase the loss of certain minerals. In severe cases, your healthcare provider may recommend a paracentesis, placement of a transjugular intrahepatic Porto systemic shunt, and ultimately a liver transplant.
