Substance Misuse

Substance misuse is not seen in every adult with ADHD. However, a research done in 2014 discovered that adults with the condition are more susceptible to substance abuse or misuse than people without the condition. This may involve the use of:
- Alcohol [1]
- Tobacco [2]
- Other medications
The research isn’t sure on what the relationship is between substance misuse and ADHD. However, one theory is that people with ADHD use certain substances to self-medicate. They may misuse these to get the following:
- Improve focus
- Improve sleep
- Relieve anxiety [3]
