Aneurysms are often silent when unruptured.
Most people do not know they have an aneurysm until it ruptures or begins to leak blood into surrounding tissues, causing noticeable symptoms. Sometimes unruptured aneurysms also cause discomfort by swelling into nearby tissues or impairing circulation. A condition known as thromboembolism develops when blood clots from an aneurysm move into smaller blood vessels and obstruct blood flow.
There are several reasons aneurysm symptoms appear. The specific symptoms a person has often depend on the type or location of the aneurysm.
